Sunday in Berawa, Canggu is not a night to wind-down. If anything, the energy hits a distinct, new level that completely flips the script on the standard end of weekend schedule. It is Bali after all and let’s face it, there’s probably a lot of people on holidays. Sunday is a specialized scene where the daylight beach crowd filters out, leaving a concentrated mix of locals, expats, and industry types who actually have time to go out.
So, what is going on?
Sunday kicks off down on the beach. For the massive, high-energy beach club experience you can’t go past Finns Beach Club, which locks down the sunset-to-dark transition with large crowds, commercial sounds and big production, while Morabito handles the electronic crowd with its iconic, open-air deep house underground sessions right on the beach. Between dinner and midnight, like everywhere around the island, options are few, but you could try the newly renovated Mesa Bali Rooftop with live music and DJs for a chilled beginning to the night.
Things start to heat up before midnight as the crowds begin to fill the roads and paths around the epicentre of Berawa’s nightlife scene―near the playing field on the corner of Jalan Pantai Berawa and Jalan Raya Semat.
Miss Fish. For a polished, intimate and luxurious vibe, you can’t go past the lounge at Miss Fish where they lock down their Sunday with proper selectors and dark rhythms. Their regular Sundaze event with DJs like Wael and Selim Akzos spinning the latest Afro, organic and melodic all night long could be the option you are looking for. It’s a stylish and classy decor, and you will feel more attractive just being there.
The Shady Pig. Just back down the road, you could try The Shady Pig. They have a special night of urban and hip hip sounds on Sundays with the Royale collective. It is one of the few venues that isn’t spinning African influenced tunes on Sundays (or maybe they drop in some too) and if you are into simple, get-down fun times, this is your place.
The Mesa Bali. If you made it to Mesa’s Rooftop earlier, you could also just stay right there and enjoy the pumping Afro house tunes of Sondela Sundays on the two floors below. It always gets busy with a solid following from the Afro community and normally has people lined up down the street trying to get in.
Jade by Todd English. The final busy spot we are visiting tonight offers Afro and Amapiano sounds on Sunday and is just around the corner from the other clubs. Jade features the Afro Roots crew with a very authentic take on the southern continent’s sounds. It is on every Sunday and it’s normally rammed.
